My Life Motto

Today is Thursday, which means I’m writing with Mama Kat’s Writers’ Workshop. I’m responding to prompt #2: What is one of your life mottos?

I’ve thought about it for the past couple of days, and I’d have to say that my motto is “Live your best life.” What does this mean?

1) Don’t compare your life to anyone else’s. Don’t compare your abilities to anyone else’s. We’re all different and it’s a waste of precious time to wish anything else.
2) Take advantage of any opportunity that comes your way. This might mean taking risks, but risks often mean a payoff down the road.
3) Look for lessons learned and the silver lining. Bad stuff happens; that’s life. Don’t waste too much time being sad. Instead, see what you can do to turn the negative positive.

I learned early on, when my best friend died at 13, that life isn’t fair and it isn’t always long. I believe that having Marfan has pushed me into living my best life. I gained an urgency of sorts to do everything that I can as soon as possible because (not to be overly dark, but…) no one is guaranteed to have tomorrow and I don’t know how long my joints will hold out. To that end, by 24, I’ve been able to earn 2 degrees, travel to 2 countries, hold a variety of jobs, get married, and have a baby. I’m slowing down some now, really relishing motherhood. Most days I feel like I’m living my best life. It’s not perfect, it’s not always happy, but it’s ME.

How do you live your best life?

What are your mottos?

  1. My life motto can be silly to some, but its a dumb quote from Boy Meets World, “Life’s rough, get a helmet” – I’ve been reading a book the last few days on the Quarterlife Crisis and this is the basic motto. We all fear change and the unknown and have doubts about ourselves, especially as we get older, but to me all of those changes and decisions (whether right or wrong) are going to shape our lives and hopefully teach us something along the way as well!

  2. I am enjoying life, love my husband, my pets, my church, my house and have a great job! My motto is “Age is mostly mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.”

  3. Maya,
Having a child with Marfan Syndrome has had some ot the same affect on our family. It has made me realize that he may not get to do alot of things later in life, so we are not waiting. We are LIVING as much as we can every day. That is a big part of the reason we started homeschooling. It allows for more felxability to experience, explore and learn about this amazing world God has blessed us with. As well as meeting and building relationships with amazing people.
I do catch myself overdoing it sometimes though and am working on balance.
And when you really think about it, none of us has a garuntee that we will live a long enough life to put off living.

I love your attitude and outlook on life Maya! Blessed to know ya!

  4. Stopping by from Mama Kat’s…

I like the first one. I don’t know how many people I know who like to play “Keeping up with the Joneses”. We like to think that we are better than everybody else, but what really matters is that we have to be the best “Us” we can be.

One of my personal mottos is that people take precedence over “stuff”. Unlike the materialistic “stuff” in our lives, the people we love cannot be replaced. Living my best life means valuing my family and friends. They’re irreplaceable.
    And you…are inspirational!

  6. I’m just love your positive attitude! And I’m amazed by all that you’ve accomplished!! Keep going girlfriend!

  7. I love your first motto! I am really working on that one, myself. I tend to compare myself and my life to everyone else’s…

Like when I read your accomplishments, I asked myself why I didn’t get two degrees…

On a more serious note, kudos to you for everything you have accomplished (so far)!!

  8. I love your motto. And that’s a great way to live your life, marfan or no Marfan. You’ve accomplished a lot!

  9. Great Mottoes. I love them all. You have an amazingly positive attitude.

Maya, I don’t know if I’ve ever told you, but especially in the last few years you’ve been such an inspiration and example to me. I don’t know if I have a life motto. If I did it would be something twofold, like, “Don’t worry too much about stuff,” and, “When you want something to happen it’s up to you to make it happen.”

I did my first Mama Kat’s prompt this week. It’s definitely not as good as yours, but it was fun to do!

  11. I love your attitude. Nice piece!

    Stopping by from SITS!

  12. Maya,

I love your life mottos! Truly inspiring. I tend to live like number three. My sister lost two baby boys, so we always found the joy in the short life they had and what they taught us.
    It was amazing.

I do have a life scripture verse, “Take hold of the life that is truly life” 1 Timothy 6:19

  13. What a beautifullittle girl you have! I love Mama Kat’s writing prompts! My motto? Well, my kind of motto ends up being more like a resolution, and for some reason, my resolutions begin at various times during the year, not Jan. 1 – they just hit me. This Fall it hit me – Find Joy, the Laughter, The happiness – all kinds.

  14. What a great post! I am so glad I stopped by tonight from SITS to visit. Hope you and your family have a great week!
